How to Measure a Golf Club
Golf is one of the most unique sports to ever participate in. It is very flexible and requires no formal training. Even a baby of today can play golf if adequately taught.
The participants in the game of golf are called golfers. Like other sports which require certain tools to play them well, for example, table tennis, badminton, and a host of others, golf game cannot be played with just our bare hands, certain tools are required for it to be efficiently played.
One of the tools used for playing golf games is called club. A golf club’s hand comes in different sizes and shapes depending on the size of the individual who is participating in the game.
A golfer who wants to perform optimally and beyond imagination must have an accurate measurement of his or her club. Measurement is necessary because it helps you to hold the club that befits you and which would also help you to play the game well.
The measurement of a golf club is solely the responsibility of the golfer due to the kind of hand he or she possesses. In this article, the nitty-gritty of how to measure your golf club would be discussed.
Step 1
Use the 48-inch rule or a measuring tape:
As a golfer who wants to measure his club, you have to bear in mind that you cannot do it with just your thinking or assumption. Club measurement has been made easy for golfers through the 48-inch rule or measuring tape. Follow this step below to take an accurate measurement of your club.
- The first rule in using your tape measurement or 48-inch rule is to carefully position your club like the way you will position it while playing with the sole also known as the bottom having contact with the ground.
- Place the end part of a rule by the club’s foot while it is still making contact with the ground.
- The measurement of the length of the club is always done from the end of the grip cap and not the topmost (up).
Step 2
The USGA Method (United States Golf Association)
The United States is one of the countries that are known to be great lovers of sports and golf is not left out. To help golfers, both beginners and experienced, to measure their club accurately, the United States Golfers Association came up with the simple steps outlined below.
- You are expected to position your club the way you will position it when you want to play golf.
- The length of the club is measured up to the edge of the holding cap, not the topmost (up).
- The difference in the result has to be around an eighth of an inch with the grip cap.
Remember this: The United States Golf Association did not set a 48-inch limit for any club. It is totally up to the golfer to take above the 48-inch as desired.
Step 3
LDA Method (Long Drivers of America)
The Long Drivers of America (LDA) has also worked on how golfers can measure their club to drive the ball a long distance. The LDA set a 50-inch limit in terms of length when measuring your club for long drive competition. Follow the steps below carefully as outlined by LDA.
- Position the shaft flat-lying against the wall and its toe driver resting on the ground.
- The result would be much bigger depending on the way you lie it to your driver.
With the easy steps above, one can easily conclude that this is the final method to follow to measure your club. But, simpler steps are given below in case you find this confusing.
Method 1
Using a tape measure. The tape is one of the major tools to use when measuring your club. Read carefully to understand the step-by-step method to follow to measure your club.
- Place the club on a flat, horizontal surface.
- Position the sole (bottom) of the club at a 60-degree angle from the surface.
- Start your measurement from the end of the grip to the end of the sole also called the bottom of the club.
Method 2
Using a measuring apparatus (equipment).
After using the tape, we are expected to proceed to the equipment. The steps are outlined below.
- Mark the club length measuring equipment (apparatus)
- Insert the club in the apparatus
- Ensure you slide the grip support until it touches the grip then read the scale.
- The final step is for you to carefully check if the length of the club corresponds to the length standards.
In addition to all the steps given below, I will be giving more processes to follow especially for the beginner to have a perfect club.
- Get the proper measuring tool. Some of the tools you will need are a 48-inch ruler and a tape measure to measure accurately the length of your club.
- Carefully position your golf club. Much emphasis has been made on this above. The way you place your club has a great effect when measuring your club. The face of the golf club should be laying flat on a flat surface so that the face is parallel to the ground.
- Place the measuring stick directly behind the golf club. Ensure that the stick makes contact with the shaft of the golf club and it is also placed on the ground, right at the feet of the club you are measuring.
Benefits of Measuring Your Golf Club
- You have a better chance of driving the ball over a long distance while playing.
- You have more confidence in yourself that you can play to any length without being tired easily.
- Having a well-measured club will always make you outstanding in the game of golf.
- The knowledge you have gathered can equally serve as a great help for the new beginner in the game.
The measurement of a golf club can be challenging most times especially to those who just started the game. But it is not difficult the way you’ve thought of. With passion and humility, you will be able to measure your club accurately, by meeting the amateurs.
